Powell's City of Books

Back to our regularly scheduled vacation: masked edition.

We set out from Bandon and FINALLY got some west coast coffee, the first of our trip (unless you count the Starbucks cold brew that Jaron got from the grocery store for our hibernation, which I don't). I know, I KNOW! It's a crime that it took this long. But, it was delicious.

We headed up the 101 to Portland. Jaron booked us 2 nights at a hotel near Powell's Books, where Julie will deposit all of her tattoo savings.

Jaron has been craving Dairy Queen for some reason (🙄) and they have either been closed or nonexistent. We were coming up on another one and were sitting in traffic, so Julie started reading its google reviews in characteristic voices. Jaron comes out with his ice cream, which WAS made correctly, and Julie suggested that he leave a review.

This section of 101 was adopted by Alpacas of Oregon. I guess they pick up litter with their mouths?

Julie slept a little in the car today, but is feeling WAY better. We found a cafe with outdoor dining for lunch and Julie got the chicken & waffles, which was the best thing I have ever eaten in my entire life.

Let's be real, we came to Portland for Powell's, not the other way around. We cased the joint Friday night before and proved we could leave without buying anything. Julie was joking and asked if there was a map, and was given a printed brochure fold-out map.

Quite possibly the best ramen I've ever had.

Saturday we returned to Powell's for business. Julie got to see the rare book room, which contained this treasure.

A great time was had by all. Jaron got 5 books.

Let's just put it this way. The cashier definitely acted like this didn't happen every day, and Jaron got a fraud alert. The hardest part was picking which ones to take home vs wait for them to be shipped.

After all of that, we needed a nap, so we headed back to the hotel and read & napped for the rest of the day.

Hunger eventually won and we got up for sushi. You know how much Julie loves s'mores, right? Well, we haven't had any on this trip because we didn't have a cooler to keep the chocolate in. So it was with great irony that we went to a bougie s'mores shop for dessert.

We got a bonus socially distant visit from Julie's oldest childhood friend!
