Blueberry Pie

Miles today: 317
Hours in the saddle: 6:23

So last night after that hot day, we were really looking forward to showers. Buut...the cottages were "air cooled." We opened all of the windows before we went to dinner hoping the evening would cool off. The low was only 68 for the night though so it was still pretty warm when we got back. So we took cool showers hoping to avoid the Texas effect we both grew up with, when you start sweating again as soon as you get out of the shower. This, in contrast to the night before when it was cold and we almost didn't have any hot water. Aye yai yai.

Today we turned back towards home. ☹️ Got an early start. Ran in to a couple of construction spots on two lane highways and got Julie down to under 15 mi to E. Again, wind screwing with our gas mileage. (How is it that we always have a head wind no matter which direction we are going?) That, and all of the overtaking. We slowed down for better fuel economy when Julie's gas light came on and we realized we were 28 miles from a gas station.

And we hit rain this afternoon. Can't complain as the first time we had to ride in the rain is on the 8th day of our trip. After a couple of hours the rain let up and we went ahead and crossed the bridge back to the mainland of Michigan. I wasn't interested in doing the bridge in both wind and rain. Just one at a time, please. The Mackinac bridge has metal grating on the inside lanes, apparently to improve structural stability by giving the air somewhere to go. Since the road was still wet, we were like, we'll just ride in the outside lane where there is normal pavement. Well, guess what? The outside lane was blocked for construction part of the way. So we did have to ride on wet metal grating for some of it. Jaron said he couldn't tell, but Sheila felt a little squirmy to me.

We went to a restaurant Julie read about that makes everything from scratch. We got there at 5:30 to a line out the door. Julie had looked at a couple of other places but they were closed on Mondays & Tuesdays, so we stayed. We got seated and noticed that we were, again, "in our demo[graphic]." As in, most of the other patrons were in their 60's and 70's. This happens a lot in general and has happened a lot on this trip. We chose to travel during the school year, and most people our age have kids and are not traveling now. And apparently we like to go to the same types of places as 60 & 70 yr olds. 🤷🏻‍♀️ So this was the supper rush. (There was no line when we left at 7.) Crazy things happen when you get going early--you can quit riding at supper time.

Oh, and Jaron had some trouble with the butter.

(In fairness, I had some trouble with the hotel's conditioner last week. It was really thick and wouldn't come out, and the bottle was just the right size to get stuck on my finger, and I fought with it for a while. At a certain point it becomes a battle of wills.)

Anyway. This restaurant makes their own pies fresh & from scratch. We both got blueberry pie and our waitress was amused when Jaron asked for some whipped cream and Julie asked for a glass of milk. On our way out, someone complimented Julie's gear by make & model. So Julie got to talk to some lady riders while Jaron paid the check (heh heh). We had not seen any lady riders on the road in Michigan yet.

Jaron found a hotel with cottages near the Lake Huron beach. We walked down to sit in some beach chairs to watch the sunset, but it started raining again. So instead we took a dip in the hot tub in our underarmor that we wore riding. Hit the spot after riding in rain in 68 degrees. Nice way to end the day.

We are only a mile or two from that restaurant and will probably go there for some breakfast pie tomorrow. Mmmm...

  1. Those 60 - 70 year olds must be the higher echelon folks or they would be home cooking instead of swarming the restaurants. But as we all know people are too lazy to cook for themselves.

I'll try sending this now instead of writing a lot just to see it not send or not publish, fucking GOOGLE ACCOUNT!
